The next generation of cell phones will have multi-protocol IM support. If they are dualmode phones (WiFi or WiMax) then they will also support voice over IM or voice over IP.
Why get a phone that has IM if it can only do Yahoo! IM? I want a phone that supports multiple protocols (YIM, AIM, Google, MSN, SIP, ...). I shouldn't have to buy a phone based on what IM network a supposed-future-buddy might be on. And I should be able to log into multiple services at the same time (i.e. be on YIM, AIM, MSN at the same time)! They will have to support features like mCUE.
Anyway, this wishlist is what 'mobile convergence' is about.
Good well balanced article..
